Welcome to the Social Firm’s Google+ User Guide. In this first installment of a 4 part series, we’ll be helping you get started in the world of Google+
The first step in joining the Google+ world is to set up an account. This can be accomplished by going to the Google main page, and either logging in with your pre-existing account, or creating a new one.
Once you are logged in, you will see this screen.
First, click Add a photo to select your personal Avatar. Then input your name, gender, and birthday. Then click the tile that says Upgrade when you are done.
You will be brought to the Add people section, which allows you to follow interesting people and pages. Select any options that interest you to follow. Click Continue when you are done.
You will be directed to the Be Awesome section next.
Now you will be able to customize your personal profile page. Start by adding a profile picture. You can either Snap a photo using your webcam, or Upload an image using a pre-existing photo on your computer.
If you are uploading an image, choose a profile picture that best represents you, as this will be your Google+ visual identity.
Once you have chosen an appropriate profile picture, it’s time to tell the G+ world a little bit more about yourself. In this screen, you can fill out more personal information such as Where do you work? Where have you gone to school? and Where do you live? Input the pertinent information, and click Finish when you are ready
You will be directed to the Dashboard, where a prompt will pop up:
Click the Get Started tab and you will be taken on a tour of Google+.
The useful tour guide will show the location of several function tabs including: Hangouts, Circles, Conversations, Customizing your Profile, and Sharing.
At the end of your tour, click the Start Sharing tab. Go ahead. Type something into the post bar. After you’re finished typing, you can liven up your posts by adding photos, videos, and links from the bar below!
These tiles allow you to provide visual clues, or helpful links along with your posts to really get your point across.
You can also select who your posts will be shared with on this drop down menu:
This allows for personalization of messages. For marketers, this useful tool will allow for maximum reach through customized sharing.
Stay tuned for Google+ A User’s Guide pt. 2: Getting Accustomed, releasing on Wednesday August 15th!
